Leïla Pile was born in 1993. She lives and works in Brussels. She studied at the National School of Visual Arts of La Cambre (Belgium).

With patience, meticulousness, sobriety, Leila Pile walks, measures, draws, dyes, weaves, unrolls, winds, systematically observing a precise and rigorous work protocol that allows her to apprehend spaces and to magnify material. Each new spatial context is a source of inspiration and experimentation – simultaneously the origin and the destination of the artist's gesture. Her practice is resolutely in situ by an anchoring in the surface, an assimilation of the dimensions, a sublimation of the volumes and the flows of the framework. The impregnation of the space is made possible through a physical and sensitive body exploration. Leïla Pile begins by measuring with her body in topometric strides. She takes some old measurements, to which she adds her own, thus creating a personal system where the units are counted in steps, fathoms, cubits, hands, spans, fins and palms. She then translates them in preliminary notes or drawings which constitute a corpus of atypical and enigmatic measurements. They are the necessary milestones of the artist's methodology and can be read as visual scores, where the units alternate, intersect and desynchronize in the manner of conceptual music. The work on the material is concomitant to this corporal appropriation and is translated by subtle and tiny interventions in the space as a way to better reveal it. Leïla Pile’s visual vocabulary is nourished by all the possibilities offered by textile, both in the diversity of materials and multiplicity of techniques. The artist takes what is essential, retaining only the substance of textile: its thread. Leïla Pile keeps the natural yarn, linen or wool in its initial state with its irregularities, reliefs, before wearing it out until the material is depleted. She does not seek to replace, but rather to produce changes in its state – between an original sweater and its ball of thread once it is unknitted – or simply to produce new forms. The yarn worked in a handloom becomes a graduated ribbon. Unrolled in space, it tells the story of the becoming of a line, which is none other than that of the total and cumulated surface of this same space. Rolled up, the graduated ribbon allows one to contain the spatial dimensions of the space in one hand. Its graduation is marked by an alternation of colours corresponding to the rhythm of the body units written and drawn beforehand. The colour is treated in its materiality, its contrasts and its intensities, more or less saturated according to the weaving and intersection of threads.
Once unfolded, Leïla Pile's lines generate new forms drawn to the scale of a place, becoming a space within a space that bodies can walk through. Her installations in all their stages give rise to new movements and spontaneous circulations that regenerate the relationship to the space and to the work.
